TEN

I sat on my bed, pondering my existence for an hour or two. There wasn’t much to puzzle out, though. Rock. Hard place. Me. Walking away was smart and also impossible. I’d hate myself if I broke it off with Kim. Even though I was young, I knew how rare a woman like her had to be. It was like I had accidentally won the lottery, and my father told me to give the money away.

I couldn’t bring myself to go through with it.

My phone chirped with a message from Kim. She said Tom was taking off for a ski trip and would be gone all night. She told me to come over to her house ASAP. I glanced at my screen, groaned, and kept staring at my ceiling.

If I put off a decision, I could pretend like I wasn’t a fuck up for a bit longer. Twenty minutes ticked by, and my phone chirped again.

Kim texted: ???

I owed her an answer. Knowing I would run to her, I still wanted to pretend like I had some self-control. I should tell her that my dad had tricked me into confessing everything. She deserved to know, but it made me look like such a dumbass kid. I was about to text back when my screen lit up with a call notification.

I answered, “Hey.”

“What’s going on?”

“I’m still a little rattled from earlier.”

“But you said they don’t suspect anything.”

“Yeah…” I winced. “Still, it was a close call.”

“Talk about heart attacks.” A long pause followed, and she asked, “Tom isn’t going skiing, is he? Such a lame lie. He’s too out of shape for something like that.”

“It’s a rave.”

“Oh, is that why you’re not answering my texts? Are you running off to party with him?”

“No. I bailed on that.”

“Why? Oh, shit. Is he getting into hard drugs now?”

“I don’t know.”

“What do you mean, you don’t know?”

“It’s not my scene, Kim. I’ve never been to a rave with him. That stuff started after I went off to school.”

“Oh.”

“Yeah, sorry. I don’t know what he’s doing. He wants to introduce me to some people that I would rather not know.”

“Thanks for being honest.”

My stomach twisted. “No problem.”

“You turned down a rave?”

“I’d rather be with you.”

“Aww. Get over here. We got the place to ourselves all night.”

A little voice whispered in my ear, Shut it down. And my outside voice asked, “Are you sure that’s a good idea?”

“It’s better than good. I got a big surprise for you. Kind of outdid myself this time. I’m actually a little worried that it might be too much for you.”

I sat up. “What’s going on?”

“Let’s just say that if we were dating, I’d be girlfriend of the year. I doubt any of your college girls can compete with this shit.” She laughed. “I’m going to send you off in style, Will. Big time.”

I was so confused. “Send me off?”

“You’re heading back to college after New Year’s. Right?”

“Yeah.”

“I wanted to give you something to remember me by.”

“Kim, I’ll never forget the last two weeks.
